The Ramper
The Ramper
This name won't be found on any current map, but was the traditional name of this part of what is now Farmer Street, according to the information board visible under the tree to the right.
The origin of the name remains an enigma. Suggestions that it was a corruption of 'rampart' have been discounted as there is no evidence either on maps or on the ground of any fortifications in the immediate area. The earliest written record dates from 1818 and relates to the granting of grazing rights on the verges.
Today the verges are mown at times chosen to encourage the growth of traditional wild flowers.
