Leaf galls on hawthorn
Leaf galls on hawthorn
Among the trees adjacent to the footpath in NS3778 : Footpath around Carman Reservoir is a common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, which bore the conspicuous galls that are shown here in the form of red, tightly-rolled leaf margins.

The galls were very common in the wider area, although most examples were yellow-green, and therefore rather less eye-catching than those shown here. They are caused by a species of mite, Phyllocoptes goniothorax.
