River Avon looking north
River Avon looking north
Here the River Avon flows behind the gardens of buildings in Bridge Street. Avon is the anglicised form of the Welsh word "afon", which means river. It's interesting that this word should have continued in use long after the celtic language, spoken by the local inhabitants prior to the Anglo Saxon invasions, had disappeared from what is now England. There are still other rivers called Avon in England, such as the "Bristol Avon", and the Avon in Hampshire.

Photographed from the riverside garden of The Star Inn.
