Gravestone at Flawford Church
Included as a particular insight into the difficulties of raising a family in the 18th century.
The left hand panel records the death in 1758 of James Hand, and of five of his children, all but one of whom survived infancy, but then died by the age of 6. The right hand panel is dedicated to his wife who predeceased him in 1748. One presumes that he was reasonably prosperous to allow such an ornate stone to be provided. The complete inscriptions read as follows:

Left:
Here lieth interr'd the body of James Hand Senior who departed this life October the 28th in the year of our Lord God MDCCLVIII (1758) and in the 66th year of his age. John son of James Hand by Mary his wife died Aug the 15th 1736 aged 6yrs. Eliz their daughter died Aug 28th 1736 aged 3 years. Mary daughter of James and Mary Hand di'd May 4th MDCCILI (1741) aged 5 years. Sam son of J & M Hand di'd June 20th 1743, in his infancy. Mary their daughter died Feb 16th 1744, aged 2 years.

Right:
Here lieth interr'd the body of Mary the former wife of James Hand Senior, the daughter of William and mary Borrow she departed this life October the 18th in the year of our Lord God MDCILVIII (1748) and in the 45th year of her age.

It is fascinating to note the variations in phrasing for the same sets of information, the mixture of roman and normal numerals for the year dates, and the use of IL instead of XL to represent 40 in the romanised dates. Clearly there was at least one surviving son, also called James, as James is referred to as 'Senior'. Also one can speculate that there was a contagious infection around in August 1736, when two of the children succumbed.
