Old Railway Bed and Platform
Old Railway Bed and Platform
The area around Salter's Gate near to Wolsingham and Tow Law is one of complex history and geography. The rail bed from here ran NNW, soon branching, to join a high level rail route crossing moorland, and to run to Tyneside; to the SE. it ran to Tow Law; the station platform may never have been opened to passengers. Nearby there is evidence of lost buildings, probable coal drops, old quarry workings and a more recent gas distribution installation. Beyond the platform lies the now disused Salter's Gate Ammuntition Depot.
