A moth: Chimney Sweeper (Odezia atrata)
This may look very like a black (or nearly black) butterfly, but this insect, with its white wing-tips, is a Chimney Sweeper moth, a day-flying species that is found in open grassland. Its food-plant is pignut (Conopodium majus).

The moth was photographed in the area that is shown in NS3976 : Footpath beside the River Leven.
