NS3976 : Branched Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum)

Branched Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum)
Branched Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum)
See NS3976 : Pool near Dumbarton Golf Course for context. The plants that can be seen growing around the pool in that photograph are patches of Branched Bur-reed. A few of those plants are shown here; for a closer look at the inflorescence, see NS3976 : Branched Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum).

This is a native species, common throughout Britain and Ireland, where it is found in still and moving fresh water (the photograph was taken after a period of warm, dry weather, and the pool next to these plants would formerly have been larger).

[There are several subspecies (or varieties, depending on the reference work consulted) of Branched Bur-reed, but the particular plants growing here are examples of Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum (Beeby) K. Richt. This identification was confirmed in early August when I examined the fruits.]
