Gospel Hall, Wallingford
Gospel Hall, Wallingford
The town's most recent place of worship, this is home to the Wallingford Christian Assembly. LinkExternal link
The building has an unusual history. It was formerly part of the old Wallingford hospital which occupied a large area now completely redeveloped with modern housing.
However, the building on this site was considered interesting enough for preservation, so it wasn't swept away with the rest of the hospital. The problem was, nobody wanted a derelict old hall some distance away from the town centre and for a long time it stood as an eyesore getting more decrepit as the years went by.
By the time the Christian Assembly took it on it was in dire need of assembly of a more earthly kind. It was more or less entirely rebuilt, but keeping the character of the old building.
