The upper half of the image shows the spore-bearing cones of NS3482 : Stag's-horn Clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum); see that item for further information on the plant. The cones are borne on sparsely-covered stems called peduncles. Some of the green sterile stems of the plant are visible in the lower half of the image.

This plant was growing alongside the section of forest track shown in NS2885 : Track through Highlandman's Wood.
