Lookout tower adjacent to the Thames flood wall
The brick tower in the distance dates back to 1906, when it was used as a lookout tower for submarines in the First World War. You may be asking, however, how can it be a lookout tower when it is obscured by a sea wall? The answer is that the sea wall is a flood defence and was installed after the Canvey Island severe floods in 1953, so the tower predates the wall by nearly 50 years.
