In 1720, the 1st Earl Stanhope made a number of additions to Chevening House and Estate, which he had bought in 1717. These included the two wings to the main house, including the East Wing, seen here (see TQ4857 : East Wing, Chevening House) and the similar West Wing (on the right), and enclosing the north forecourt in a locally made wrought iron surround, of which part can be seen in the photo.

The two wings, along with the main house, are grade I listed (for listing particulars see LinkExternal link ) and the ironwork is grade II listed (for listing particulars see LinkExternal link.
