Bole Hill Quarry, Upper Padley, Derbyshire
Bole Hill Quarry, Upper Padley, Derbyshire
Once a 'super-quarry' where the stone used in the construction of the nearby Howden and Derwent reservoir dams was extracted. This picture shows the top of the 300 ft, 1 in 3 incline where a cable railway took the stone to the railway. The quarry closed in 1914 and it is remarkable how an industrial site has been reclaimed by nature and is now such a beautiful place.
