taken 8 years ago, near to Woodland, Devon, Great Britain

Ryegrass (Lolium perenne)
Ryegrass (Lolium perenne)
The two common subspecies of ryegrass look very similar in flower. Perennial ryegrass (ssp. perenne) is a native perennial grass long sown as a fodder crop, for hay or for grazing. It is also an important component of the grass mix for sports pitches. Italian ryegrass (ssp. multiflorum) is an annual or biennial, introduced for fodder but naturalized everywhere. A field of flowering ryegrass has a tawny or bronzy tinge and the shiny flowering stems glitter as they gracefully arch and sway SX7870 : Ryegrass and clover near Crosspark
