Staines Moor: Former rifle butts
Staines Moor: Former rifle butts
In Victorian times Staines Moor was the home to a long rifle range that extended from near the Windsor railway line to these butts about one kilometre north. It was mainly used by the local Volunteers. However the Great Western Railway completed their line from West Drayton to Staines in 1885 about 100 metres to the west of, and parallel to, the range. The railway company then became increasingly concerned that their passengers could be accidentally shot and the range was forced to close in 1892. These butts are the last remaining artefact of the rifle range.

The circular pond in front is one of several depressions on the moor that may have water in them from time to time.
