Minor Road to Branxton
Minor Road to Branxton
Branxton village is visible at the bottom of the hill. The small watercourse that goes below the road, just before the trees, drained the boggy land that was to be devastating to the Scottish army at the Battle of Flodden Moor in 1513. The English forces were largely arraigned on the minor ridge where the land rises again from this valley this side of the village.
The Battle of Flodden Field :: NT8837
Also called the Battle of Branxton Moor. It was fought on September 9th 1513 between an invading Scots army under King James IV and an English army commanded by Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. It ended in a victory for the English and was the largest battle (in terms of numbers) fought between the two nations.
