The ground on which the Hanoverian government forces under the command of General Sir John Cope expected to confront the Jacobite Army has been laid out as a modern sports complex. At the time of the battle it was a bog. Cope lined up his troops facing the town of Tranent to the south (off-frame left), based on the intelligence that the Jacobites were coming from the direction of Carberry Tower rather than directly through Musselburgh as initially anticipated. The Pentland Hills and Arthur's Seat can be seen in the distance. LinkExternal link
