A view of the ground beyond the trees from which the Jacobite Army made its 'Highland charge' at dawn against the government troops. The Jacobites had been expected to appear directly south of the redcoat lines, but had crossed a bog in the early hours to take up position west of Seton House. The element of surprise thus achieved caused panic in the government ranks as their commanders tried to effect a 90 degree turn to face the oncoming rush of clansmen. The result was less a battle, more a panic-stricken rout that lasted less than ten minutes. Casualties on the government side were heavy: an estimated seven or eight officers and 300 hundred combatants killed, and between four and five hundred wounded (including 83 officers), all of whom were taken prisoner; as against three or four officers and 30 combatants killed, and 70 to 80 wounded on the Jacobite side.
