Footpath diversion from ancient way
At this point someone decided that the public way should follow the field edge parallel to the ancient route. This was no doubt based on the condition of the sunken way in winter, which looked as if it could be rather wet. However, in midsummer on the hottest day of the year so far, it was decided to continue on the old way, which was dry, unobstructed, and shady.
