These orchids were most abundant in this sloping field on areas of seepage in wetter times. At first they were assumed to be Common Spotted-orchids, which are indeed common in Sussex. Closer inspection revealed they were the less widely distributed Heath Spotted-orchid, restricted to somewhat acidic soils.
