Allotments and "crinkle-crankle wall"
Allotments and "crinkle-crankle wall"
The allotments were started in World War II, on the former kitchen garden of the house. At the back is the retaining wall (thought to be of 16th century origin) of St. Peter's churchyard. It is constructed of buttresses connected by concave bays, so is not strictly a crinkle-crankle wall, as these have a sinuous shape (information from downloadable guide LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) ).
Wikipedia has a good view of the wall LinkExternal link . Its construction appears remarkably similar to Aldermaston lock LinkExternal link , which is about 13.5km south east of Caversham Court as the crow flies.
Caversham Court
There has been a garden here beside the River Thames for hundreds of years; the present layout dates from the 17th century. The property was privately owned until the 1930s, when it was purchased by Reading Corporation. A house on the site was demolished, and the grounds opened for public recreation. During 2008/9, a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled Reading Borough Council to renovate the gardens to the very high standard we see today.
Information about Caversham Court, including a downloadable guide, is available on the Council's website LinkExternal link . The application document for Heritage Lottery funding gives a detailed site history, and photos of the gardens before restoration LinkExternal link .
