Tea Kiosk, Caversham Court
Tea Kiosk, Caversham Court
Built in 1934 as a toilet block when the gardens first opened to the public. Today it has a dual role - the part facing is used by local charities to provide refreshments LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) , and there are still toilets round the back. It was designed by the Reading Corporation architect - the style has been described as either "cottage ornée" or Arts and Crafts. It is believed some of the building materials were taken from the demolished house.
Caversham Court
There has been a garden here beside the River Thames for hundreds of years; the present layout dates from the 17th century. The property was privately owned until the 1930s, when it was purchased by Reading Corporation. A house on the site was demolished, and the grounds opened for public recreation. During 2008/9, a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled Reading Borough Council to renovate the gardens to the very high standard we see today.
Information about Caversham Court, including a downloadable guide, is available on the Council's website LinkExternal link . The application document for Heritage Lottery funding gives a detailed site history, and photos of the gardens before restoration LinkExternal link .
