Victoria Plaza and Campanile Chimney, Kew Gardens
Victoria Plaza and Campanile Chimney, Kew Gardens
This is a view of the Italianate Campanile smoke stack that stands beside Victoria Gate. It once provided heat to Palm House via boilers in its basement running beneath iron gratings in the floor. A 150-metre long tunnel ran between the Palm House and the smoke stack to carry away the sooty fumes emitted by the chimney and enable coal to be brought to the boilers by underground railway. The chimney, however, is now redundant and serves only as a landmark, since Palm House is now heated by gas and the tunnel houses the Palm House's Keeper's office. View taken looking north-northeast from Victoria entrance plaza.
