Narrow section of Pillmawr Road, Caerleon
Narrow section of Pillmawr Road, Caerleon
Before the opening in April 2010 of the Malpas to Caerleon cycle route and footpath,LinkExternal link pedestrians and cyclists wishing to travel between these two parts of Newport had the choice of using narrow and dangerous Pillmawr Road, or a long journey via the Usk bridge in the centre of Newport.

This view of Pillmawr Road illustrates the potential dangers to pedestrians and cyclists. The road here is narrow, with no pavemenents, and hedges on either side. The road is rarely free of cars for more than a few minutes during most of the day.
