Inside the Pit
Inside the Pit
There are said to be graptolites in some of the rocks making up the sides of the pit, but unfortunately, and much to the frustration of the palaeontologists among us, it was deemed too unstable and dangerous to go and look for them. Graptolites are fossils of animals which lived between 300 and 500 million years ago. Their significance is that they evolved over that time into many different species, and can be used to date the formation of the rocks in which they are found.
