Puss Moth (Cerura vinula)
What a moth which lives in parks and gardens and feeds on trees was doing at the bottom of a treeless opencast mine, I have no idea. It is named from its supposed resemblance to a cat.

TA0487 : Puss Moth caterpillar in South Cliff Gardens is a Puss Moth caterpillar photographed by John S Turner.
