Working narrowboat on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal
This is narrowboat "Battersea" approaching Radford Bridge near Stafford at dusk.

Battersea is registered with British Waterways with number 49292 as a powered craft (24BHP) with a metal hull, built by Harland and Wolff in October 1936. It was originally intended as a GUCCC pairing with the (unpowered) butty No 230, Bayswater. It was sold by BWB in 1967. Note the riveted steel hull. The length of 71ft 6in (21.8 metres) is the absolute maximum for most of the canal system. There is no rope fender fitted to the bow; the extra 30cm or so would make the boat too long for most locks.
