Sandsfoot Castle - Weymouth
Sandsfoot Castle - Weymouth
Although completed in 1539 by Henry VIII to guard the shipping in Portland Harbour together with Portland Castle the other side, the castle's future as a fortified stronghold was to be shortlived. It was originally built to house 50 armed soldiers but by 1584 the sea was already eating away at its foundations. It limped on until after the Civil War and then was struck off the list as a useful fortification in the middle of the 17C. At some time it became a mint producing coins and at another time a storehouse.
