St Mary's church in Dennington - C19 stained glass
One of the aisle windows made by E Wollnough of Framlingham in 1858.

St Mary's church > Link dates mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries, the flint and stone flushwork panelling on the porch dates from the 15th century. Inside, the building still has the original nave roof dating from the 1430s and most of the woodwork of the aisle roofs dates from the same time. The C14 font > Link has a C15 cover. The pulpit > Link dates from the 17th century. The church has a magnificent set of 15th century benches with carved backs and ends, poppyheads and armrests depicting animals and mythological creatures > Link. A sciapod > Link - these are mythological, dwarf-like creatures with a single, large foot that extends from one thick leg centred in the middle of their body (the Dennington sciapod has two feet) - can be seen carved into one of the bench ends -the carving is unique in an English church. Of great interest also are the complete and very well preserved C15 parclose screens including their original lofts > Link. Only the base panels > Link remain of the chancel screen. The St Margaret's chapel > Link contains the Bardolph tomb > Link which commemorates Sir William Phelip (Lord Bardolph), who fought with Henry V at Agincourt, and his wife. A monument with effigies of Sir Thomas Rous (d 1603) and his wife can be seen on the wall above. 14th century stained glass > Link in its original position can be seen in the upper parts of some of the chancel windows. Suspended above the altar is a pyx (a container for holding or transporting the Eucharist) with its original C15 wooden canopy > Link.
