SS9970 : Redundant facility

Redundant facility
Redundant facility
One of many redundant facilities on the airfield previously occupied by the RAF. This was one of the buildings used for surface finish, or painting, of aircraft to the highest of standards and was the premier site for work on such aircraft as the Hawks of the Red Arrows and the historic aircraft, Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane et al, of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The stacks facilitated the venting of potentially noxious fumes into the atmosphere during the painting and subsequent baking process after having been treated and filtered.
