Monument for Edward Stafford, 2nd Earl of Wiltshire
Monument for Edward Stafford, 2nd Earl of Wiltshire
The monument for Edward Stafford, 2nd Earl of Wiltshire (d.1499), who refounded the chantry and had the chapel rebuilt. He is shown in armour with a heraldic surcoat and wears an SS collar, denoting his sympathy with the Lancastrian cause. His tomb was probably made by carvers from the alabaster quarries near Nottingham, which had by then superseded those at Chellaston. Fragments of colour can be found on various parts of the monument, and around the shields on its sides are circles with intertwined Stafford knots. The inscription is especially beautifully carved with letters in relief and delicate foliage trails. The fact that he founded a chantry is denoted by the tiny figures of clerics with rosaries, which sit beneath his feet in the back of a bear, the emblem of the Staffords.
