Memorial of Charles Sackville, 5th Duke of Dorset.
Memorial of Charles Sackville, 5th Duke of Dorset.
The memorial of Charles Sackville, 5th and last Duke of Dorset. He was the son of Lord George Sackville, younger son of Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset, the owner of Knole in Kent. Lord George inherited Drayton in 1769 under the terms of the will of Lady Betty Germain. Due to the failure of the male line at Knole the Dorset title passed to Charles and on his death in 1843 unmarried, the Dukedom lapsed and Drayton descended to the Stopford Sackvilles (current owners of Drayton) and Knole went to the Sackville-Wests. The tomb was sculpted by 'Richard Westmacott Junior'. The two hatchements commemorate the 5th Duke (over his tomb) and William Bruce Stopford Sackville.
