Grave of 206259 Serjeant W Baston, Biddestone Cemetery
This non-commissioned officer died on 9th May 1918, a time when the Great War was approaching its end but when the Central Powers were still fighting hard. Most soldiers who fell on the battlefields were buried there, if their bodies could be found and identified, giving rise to the famous line that 'there is a corner of some foreign field that is forever England', so I am speculating that Searjeant Baston died of his wounds in this country having been evacuated as a casualty back to his homeland. The badge carved into his gravestone is that of the Royal Tank Corps.
