Hawthorn Blossom (Crataegus monogyna)
Hawthorn Blossom (Crataegus monogyna)
The Hawthorn was in full bloom. This is also known as May, and controversy rages as to the meaning of the saying, 'Ne'er cast a clout till May be out'. Does this mean, as we were told as children, 'Don't leave off your winter clothes until the end of the month of May', or 'Don't leave off your winter clothes until after the hawthorn blossom appears'? In some parts of the country, it may be academic, but in others, it could make a couple of weeks' difference either way.
