Petts Wood Junction
Petts Wood Junction
Class 376 Electrostar no 376 016 passing through Petts Wood Junction on a Cannon Street to Orpington service.

Part of the Chislehurst Junction complex, Petts Wood Junction was built in 1902, following the merger of the South Eastern Railway and the London Chatham and Dover Railway in 1899. This was the point where the two main lines of the companies crossed, the former running out of Charing Cross/Cannon Street/London Bridge towards Tonbridge, the latter running out of Victoria towards Chatham, but with no physical connection. Following the merger, steps were taken to allow trains from the respective London termini to run on to the other company's routes. Petts Wood Junction (originally Orpington Junction, prior to the building of Petts Wood Station in 1928, although the junction name did not change until 1936) was the first to open, allowing trains from Victoria to run to Orpington; connections allowing trains from Charing Cross to run towards Swanley on the old Chatham main line followed two years later in 1904.

This photo shows the former South Eastern main line, with the connections to/from Bickley Junction on the Victoria diverging both sides. Originally single track, they were doubled in 1994 to cater for Eurostars running to the Channel Tunnel, which used these links to gain the main line through to Tonbridge and Ashford en route to the tunnel, until the opening of the first section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2003.
