Ashby Canal north of Burton Hastings, Warwickshire
Taken on a cloudy dull June morning, Colley's Bridge (No 12) is just visible in the distant gloom.

The present Ashby Canal is twenty-two miles in length, with no locks. Original eighteenth century plans to build it from Marston Jabbett to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and the River Trent were never completed. The section north of Snarestone (the present terminus) is being restored as far as Conkers (beyond Moira) and will eventually give a thirty mile lockless, mainly rural cruise. The main cargoes for which the canal as constructed in the 1790s were coal and limestone.
