Great Punchard Gill: Site of Punchard Coal Level
Great Punchard Gill: Site of Punchard Coal Level
Unusually in an area well known for lead mining, this is the location of an old coal mine; it would have been worked by a near horizontal level rather than by a shaft which is the most usual approach to mining for coal; the portal of the level is no longer visible. To the left of the stream is a gradually eroding spoil heap with a ruined building on top.
