Bank of Scotland, the Mound
Bank of Scotland, the Mound
The Bank of Scotland Head Office, still proclaiming the Union that helped make its fortune, but with a significant concession to nationalist opinion in its choice of flags. Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, and his Scottish National Party, with its not so well-hidden republican agenda, want the Union flag (described by one SNP MSP as a 'butcher's apron') to be removed from all public buildings in favour of the Scottish Saltire. In the case of Edinburgh Castle, the proposal is a non-starter, because "it ain't their property" but the Crown's. Will the Bank give way to popular pressure, or remain die-hard in its support of the Union? Watch this building!

[Note: Since writing the above caption, I have discovered that the Castle is no longer listed as a Crown property in the care of the Crown Estate Commissioners. In 1999 ownership was transferred to the Secretary of State for Scotland, who passed it on to the devolved Scottish Executive. But what is one to make of the following official statements on the subject? "The 1999 transfer did not, however, involve the ownership of these buildings being conveyed "to Scotland". (...) The matter being settled was the management of the properties." and "This reflects that the issue was not the ownership of the properties. (...) The transfer was from property held by the Crown in Scotland to property held by the devolved government in Scotland. The significance was thus more about management than ownership." I think a legal and potentially political issue is being dodged or fudged here. The quotations are taken from this document LinkExternal link]
