Waverley Station roof
Waverley Station roof
Classic Victorian railway station roof in the 'Crystal Palace' style with panes of sheet glass held within a framework of iron girders supported by cast-iron columns decorated with moulded capitals. The roof is about to undergo a major restoration which will take an estimated three years to complete. The project is a vast undertaking. Waverley is the second largest railway station in Great Britain (over 25 acres), being originally a combination of three stations belonging to separate companies: Canal Street Station of the Edinburgh, Leith and Granton Railway, which lay on a north-south axis, Edinburgh General of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway and North Bridge station of the North British Railway which met at a central concourse. The became known as Edinburgh Waverley in the mid-1850s. It is estimated that 28,000 panes of glass will be required for the renovation. LinkExternal link
