St Mary's church in Old Hunstanton - churchyard
What at first glance looks like a fallen gate is in fact a memorial beside the path traversing St Mary's churchyard.

St Mary's church, situated in the grounds of Hunstanton Hall, is one of the largest churches in the area LinkExternal link. It was built by Sir Hamon le Strange in about 1300 and has the unusual feature of having its tower now located at the western corner of the north aisle (indicating that the present-day north aisle once used to be the original church) - a result of extensive rebuilding and restoration work during the 19th century by architect Frederick Preedy. Older survivals are the early Norman font > LinkExternal link and the medieval rood screen depicting the 12 apostles > LinkExternal link - LinkExternal link. An altar tomb to Henry le Strange (d. 1485) and his wife Katerine is located in a recess in the north chapel wall > LinkExternal link and the altar tomb at the east end of the north aisle once covered the grave of Sir Roger le Strange in the centre of the chancel > LinkExternal link. The stained glass windows > LinkExternal link - LinkExternal link date from the 19th century as does the carved stone pulpit > LinkExternal link. The church is open every day.
