NT2574 : Iron gutter on Calton Hill

taken 7 years ago, near to Edinburgh, Great Britain

Iron gutter on Calton Hill
Iron gutter on Calton Hill
A rather mysterious metal gutter running downhill to a drain. The other side of the street has no equivalent. It seems that there used to be a coaching inn on the site of the present Parliament House Hotel at the top of the street, so there is presumably some connection. It seems too wide to have been a guide rail for a coach wheel; besides, it would have made more sense for coaches to have left from the top end of the street which enters Waterloo Place. So, was it a way of canalising effluent containing horse manure when cleansing stables?
