Stone ball, Old Calton Burying Ground
For an exciting millisecond I thought I'd found one of Mons Meg's stray offspring (after all, one of its shots from the Castle was once recovered from Wardie Muir, fully two miles away). But it is clearly a rounded stone that has fallen off a gatepost or a grave - though I couldn't identify which one.

"Item, the thrid day of Julii, to certane pyonaris [pioneers] for thair laubouris in the monting of Mons furtht of hir lair to be schote, and for the finding and carying of hir bullet eftir scho wes schot fra Weirdie Mure to the castell of Edinburgh ... x s. viij d. [i.e. 10 shillings and 8 pence]" -- entry in the Treasurer's Accounts, July 1558.
