Dugald Stewart Monument, Calton Hill
The prominent landmarks are (l. to r.): the old Scotsman Office at the southern end of North Bridge, the crown steeple of St Giles in the High Street behind the City Chambers, the obelisk of the Martyrs Monument and, lower to the right, the David Hume mausoleum, both in the Old Calton Burying Ground; then, immediately left of the Monument, the steeple of the Highland-Tolbooth Church at the top of the Lawnmarket; and to the right of the partially obscured Castle on its rock, the former North British Hotel with its massive clock tower, the gothic spire of the Scott Monument in Princes Street, the distant Caledonian Hotel, the corner tower of a former department store, now Top Shop, the spire of St George's West at the West End with those of St Mary's Cathedral beyond, and, slightly lower down on the extreme right, the dome of Robert Adam's Register House.
