Northern slope of the Calton Hill
Northern slope of the Calton Hill
Once a favourite spot for the summer pastime of kids sliding down the dry grass on sledges made from cardboard boxes in the 1950s. Such were the strange characters that children might meet on the Hill that it was rumoured that police whistles had been issued to some vigilant housewives, whose windows overlooked it, to alert the police to any unsavoury goings-on taking place.
