Aircraft tail fin - not all that it seems
Aircraft tail fin - not all that it seems
Glimpsed through a gap in the trees is the tail fin of the Gatwick fire trainer rig. Apparently these days a scrapped but real aircraft is inadequate for fire-fighting training purposes. Instead, a purpose-built mock-up is the thing, as it is easier to build in and set up the required variety of scenarios. Manufactured by Kidde, this one has a Boeing 747 sized fuselage with this tail fin incorporating a somewhat anachronistic tail-mounted "engine". For a full view, see TQ2540 : Big Grey Plane. In the foreground is the end of the Vallance By-ways landing strip.
