The Castle from Castle Terrace
The Castle from Castle Terrace
The Castle's impressiveness owes far more to the natural magnificence of the rock on which its stands than its mostly non-descript buildings. Apart from the Palace block of the Stewarts and the visual impact of the Half-Moon Battery, most of what visitors see is a collection of old Georgian and Victorian barracks. Nonetheless, they should count themselves fortunate that past proposals to 'improve' the Castle were rejected; including the plan for a Teutonic Schloss (which might have pleased Prince Albert) or the bizarre idea of a Victorian entrepreneur to buy the site for his vinegar factory. Fish and chips may be an important part of the traditional Scottish diet, but that was surely taking things too far.
