Wallace statue, Edinburgh Castle
One of two figures flanking the drawbridge on the Gatehouse of Edinburgh Castle, the other being that of King Robert the Bruce. Wallace's deeds achieved immortality through the tales of the poet 'Blind Harry', the Minstrel - hardly a reliable eye-witness (!) to the events described, as he lived in the late 15th century. Portraying Wallace as almost a Robin Hood character, they were recited in the houses of the nobility and well received at the royal court. James IV's Treasurer's Accounts contain the following entry for 8th Dec. 1505: "To bynding of Wallass's sword with cordis of silk and new hilt and plomet, new skabbard, and new hilt to the said sword, XXVj.sh." Now kept in the Wallace Monument at Stirling, the sword, whose blade may contain metal from the original, has become one of Scotland's sacred relics.
