Although many Scots would nominate David I as their most successful king for his peacetime achievements in the 12th century, the Bruce stands undisputed as her greatest warrior-king for his struggle against English occupation and his resounding victory of arms against the English at Bannockburn in 1314. By all accounts a brilliant tactician, he dealt ruthlessly with the internal opposition to his dynastic ambition for which he was prepared to commit sacrilegious murder along the way, while facing apparently insurmountable odds by taking on the 'Auld Enemy'. The Declaration of Arbroath describes him as "another Maccabeus or Joshua" who "that his people and his heritage might be delivered out of the hands of our enemies, endured toil and fatigue, hunger and peril". Few men in history have earned such sincere and profound admiration from their people.

"The Divine Providence, the right of succession by the laws and customs of the kingdom (which we will defend till death) and the due and lawful consent and assent of all the people, made him our king and prince. To him we are obliged and resolved to adhere in all things, both upon the account of his right and his own merit, as being the person who hath restored the people's safety in defence of their liberties." -- from the Declaration of Arbroath, 6th April, 1320
