Bruce statue, Edinburgh Castle
One of two figures flanking the drawbridge on the Gatehouse of Edinburgh Castle, the other being that of Sir William Wallace whom, it is believed, Bruce posthumously knighted. In an astonishing career as self-crowned King of Scots, Bruce spent years struggling against adversity with an unrelenting determination, symbolised in the story of the spider in the cave, propagated by Walter Scott in his 'Tales Of A Grandfather'. Despite being an excommunicant, guilty of sacrilegious murder, Bruce persuaded John XXII to recognise the legitimacy of his claim to rule Scotland, in return for acknowledging the authority of a schismatic pope - a clear case of "If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours". The Bruce aristocracy installed after the Battle of Bannockburn still remains the core of the Scottish nobility to this day.
