Somewhere behind all this razzamatazz is concealed one of Scotland's most important historic buildings. Given that Scotland wasn't playing, what was all the fuss about anyway? Some English people think that the Scots are just being mean when they remain lukewarm about England's prospects in the world's most important soccer tournament, but what they don't understand is that this attitude is not something over which we have much control. It's built into our national DNA. The Declaration of Arbroath, which counts as our national birth certificate, states quite clearly: "For as long as but one hundred of us remain alive, we shall never consent to support England in the World Cup. For it is not for glory, or for riches, or for honours that we fight, but for the right to field our own national football team, which no honest man would give up, except for his wife."
If you don't believe me, look up the original.
