The building is a Solicitors Office. The portico to the right was once the entrance to the British Linen Bank. Henry Cockburn relates that in 1806 "a murder was committed in Edinburgh which made a greater impression than any in our day. (...) James Begbie, porter to the British Linen Bank was going down the close (...) carrying a parcel of banknotes of the value of four or five thousand pounds when he was struck dead, by a single stab... This was done at about five in the evening, and within a few yards of a military sentinel who was always on guard there... The soldier saw and heard nothing. All that was observed was by some boys who were playing at hand ball. They saw two men enter the close as if together, the one behind the other, and that the front man fell, and lay still; and they, ascribing this to his being drunk, let him lie and played on. It was only on the entrance of another person, that the man was found to be dead, with a knife in his heart. The skill, boldness, and success of the deed produced deep and widespread horror. People trembled at the possibility of such a murderer being in the midst of them." The culprit was never caught but was believed to be a criminal hanged 20 years later for another crime.
